Telemedicine

Telemedicine is the quickest route to a prescription โ€” and the route currently being shaken hardest. Before the list below, three things you should know: what the legislator in Germany intends, why the Swiss position is legally blurred, and why in Austria there is in practice no workable remote route to a Suchtgiftrezept.

Germany: permitted, but going through the legislature

Permitted, but politically contested: a draft law would require an initial in-person consultation and ban the mail-order dispatch of flower.

First Act amending the MedCanG, BT-Drs. 21/3061 of 3 December 2025 โ€” with the health committee ever since, without a second or third reading. It would change ยง 3 MedCanG (Abs. 2 in-person contact, Abs. 3 a dispatch ban for flower; pharmacy courier delivery would stay permitted). No transition period is foreseen โ€” the act would enter into force the day after promulgation.

In practice: anyone starting therapy through a platform today should reckon with the first contact having to be in person in future, and with the postal dispatch of flower possibly falling away โ€” the pharmacy's courier service would remain permitted under the draft. No transition period is foreseen.

Switzerland: legally blurred

Legally blurred: Art. 46 Abs. 1 BetmKV requires the prescribing doctor to have examined the patient in person. No official interpretation for video consultations exists.

We put it that plainly because the Swiss search results are dominated by platforms selling exactly this model.

Austria: no workable remote route

There is no workable remote-prescribing practice for a Suchtgiftrezept. Offers promising an Austrian cannabis prescription online should be treated with caution.

How the platforms work โ€” by their own account

Of the 31 platforms in the directory, 18 name a video consultation, 5 also offer in-person appointments and 11 work, by their own account, with a questionnaire alone that a doctor reviews. Where a price is published, the first contact costs โ‚ฌ4.20โ€“โ‚ฌ120.00; a follow-up appointment or prescription โ‚ฌ9.90โ€“โ‚ฌ39.00. The prescription is a private one, sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice or handed over as an E-Rezept token; the pharmacy ships or delivers by courier. What no platform publishes: how often a request is declined.
