Costs and reimbursement in Austria
In Austria the cost is not decided by the question “cannabis, yes or no” but by which box of the Erstattungskodex your preparation sits in. For dronabinol that means authorisation by the insurer's medical officer — otherwise you pay yourself.
Without authorisation, patients pay themselves. There are no public price lists for magistral dronabinol.
The rule
Possible, but subject to prior authorisation: in the Erstattungskodex (reimbursement code), dronabinol is tied to approval by the insurer's medical officer.
Sativex and Epidyolex sit in the yellow area of the Erstattungskodex (box Y, RE1) and therefore also require authorisation, each with its own rule text. Canemes is not listed in the Erstattungskodex and is reimbursed only in justified individual cases. We re-check each box status separately before every publication; they change monthly.

Der Erstattungskodex führt Dronabinol im Verzeichnis „Magistrale Zubereitungen“ (EKO 1/2026) unter jenen Stoffen, die „auf Grund einer Empfehlung der HEK ausdrücklich dem Gelben Bereich zuzuordnen sind und dementsprechend – sowohl rein als auch in Verarbeitung – nur mit vorheriger Bewilligung des chef- und kontrollärztlichen Dienstes abgegeben werden können“; für Dronabinol ist keine Ausnahme von der Chefarztpflicht eingetragen. What belongs in the application
Authorisation by the medical officer is not a formality but an assessment. It rests on the same documentation that counts in Germany and Switzerland:
- The diagnosis with its severity, worded by the doctor.
- The earlier therapies: preparation, dose, duration, outcome, reason for stopping. Without this list there is no authorisation.
- Why standard therapy has been exhausted or is contraindicated.
- A measurable therapeutic goal.
- For Sativex additionally: the conditions required by the rule text.

Why no prices appear here
For magistral dronabinol preparations there is no public price list in Austria — neither from the chamber nor from the insurer. What circulates in media reports are individual figures with no official basis. We do not present them as a price. If you need a reliable figure, ask your pharmacy for a cost estimate for the specific formulation and quantity; that is the only number that applies to you.
